Have you made your New Year’s Resolution yet? Did you decide to try something different, make new friends and learn a new skill or hobby?
Then maybe, Shireoaks WI is just for you! It’s sometimes hard to venture out on a winter’s night but with a little bit of effort it’s worthwhile and you can feel better for it mentally and physically.
The group meet on the third Thursday of every month in Shireoaks Village Hall at 7.00pm. The hall has a well-lit car park and a good central heating system for those chilly nights! They have a varied programme which they hope will suit most tastes and think they are a friendly group of ladies who will make you feel most welcome. They don’t bite – go along and see what they have to offer. For further information visit their Facebook page or contact Dawn Short on 07817 681778.
Over the past few months, the group have enjoyed a circular walk in Shireoaks and Rhodesia culminating in a cream tea in the garden of one of their members, a day trip to Renishaw Hall and a lunch excursion to the Travellers Rest near Dronfield where the speciality was cheese – over 50 different varieties. Their speakers have been wide and varied. Last month they had a very interesting talk by a woman who had flown from Netherthorpe Airfield to Sydney in a light aircraft over a six-week period, raising money to help fund vital eyesight operations for people from third world countries. She also spoke of the trials and tribulations she had on the way as she passed through Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific.
Their 24 / 25 programme culminates in a birthday party at Shireoaks Sports and Social Club in March to celebrate 80 years of the Shireoaks and District WI. At their first meeting they talked about gathering Rose Hips to make syrup and knitting socks for the soldiers fighting in WWII.
They still like to think that they can help with local campaigns but maybe their syrup making days are over!
