As November approaches, Ryton Chorale eagerly anticipates its next concert, taking place on Saturday 16th November at The Crossing. The choir will be performing ‘The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace’, an emotional and fitting piece for this time of year, composed by the Welsh composer Karl Jenkins in 1999.
Reflecting on the most war-torn and destructive century in human history, the work looks forward with hope for a more peaceful future.
It is dedicated to the victims of the Kosovo conflict, which was unfolding as Jenkins composed the piece. The Armed Man was commissioned by the Royal Armouries Museum for the Millennium celebrations, marking the museum’s relocation from London to Leeds.
The performance will also include a selection of supporting pieces, such as a French folk song, aligning with the French source that Jenkins incorporates, and an arrangement of the hymn For the Fallen, by Ryton Chorale’s accompanist, Jack Pickford. Jack will also contribute an organ solo, a wonderful addition for which the choir is extremely grateful.
Tickets are available from choir members, online at www.rytonchorale.org.uk, or via telephone on 07908 224300. Tickets are priced at £12.00, with free entry for accompanied children under 16.
Looking ahead to the Christmas concert, the choir will be performing at St Anne’s Church in Worksop on Monday 16th December. Further details will follow next month.
