As the days grow grey and the nights lengthen, the Muddy Fork garden is winding down for winter. With little still growing, the last of the tomatoes have been made into green tomato chutney, while the sprouting broccoli and courgettes continue their slow progress. Only the kale remains thriving, showing remarkable cheer for the season, and the leeks are looking healthy. The recently planted onions and garlic are also coming along nicely, and with some luck, there will be a supply of winter greens.
The maintenance programme continues apace. Following the offer of a large second-hand shed, plans are in place to refurbish it by reusing parts from the smaller, older Muddy Fork shed. This new, hybrid structure will provide much-needed space for garden tools and other essential equipment.
Construction of a wood store has also begun, with the base being built from freshly painted pallets. It will have solid sides and a waterproof cover, creating a dedicated storage space for donated wood, currently occupying growing space in the polytunnel. The wood will be kept dry, protected from the elements, and neatly stacked for easy access.
Additional maintenance tasks are underway. Raised beds are being topped up and will be repaired as needed. A recent application of woodchip appears to have slowed weed growth, making garden upkeep a little easier.
