Aurora Wellbeing Centre

by | 15 June 2024 | Local Charity, Worksop

Aurora is a cancer charity providing support in the local area for people living with cancer or a long-term health condition. But Aurora is not just a cancer charity; they have a variety of support groups, counselling services and recreational activities on offer for the public too as well as the Heritage Hub, a charity shop and tearooms.

Spotlight on… Volunteering

Volunteer week, which takes place the first week in June, for the charity sector is Aurora’s opportunity to say ‘Thank you’ to all their wonderful volunteers who give their time and energy to help provide services for the people of Bassetlaw.

Aurora is lucky to have so many great volunteers and they are always looking for more! There are various roles within the Centre, from helping in the Charity Shop or Tearooms to working behind the scenes in administration or at any of their fundraising events throughout the year. If you have a couple of hours to spare and would like to volunteer at Aurora and make a difference in your community, call in for a chat or pick up a volunteer application form.

Art Therapy Exhibition

Aurora’s first Art Exhibition was officially opened by Claire Mitchell-Wall on Monday 29th April and will run until the 31st July.

The exhibition showcases pieces from Aurora’s Photography and ‘Identity and Loss’ workshops. With a mixture of experimental textile designs and photography, participants learned new skills, explored new techniques and had their own individual experiences using creative practices to reflect on areas of their wellbeing.

The first of its kind, Aurora’s Alice in Wonderland-themed ‘Identity and Loss’ workshop, facilitated by Counsellor Claire Mitchell-Wall and Art Therapist Beth Thompson looked at the theme of identity and loss before and after a cancer diagnosis. Participants were encouraged to process their feelings of loss in a safe space through a therapeutic creative activity, where they began to explore their identity and plan the first design.

Using various textiles and techniques, participants decorated or deconstructed t-shirts to represent different elements of the individual’s identity. The second part of the design explores what has been gained which aims to increase understanding of a sense of self.
This exhibition is well worth a visit – everyone is welcome!
Aurora thanks the UK Government Levelling Up Fund for project funding and Lizzie Songhurst for delivering the Photography Workshop and taking photos at the opening – Songhurst Photography.
