Summer party beats the rain!

The Dukeries u3a Annual Garden Party was never going to be beaten by the very changeable – but generally wet – summer, so their version of ‘Picnic in the Park’ became – for one year only (they hope) – a ‘Picnic in the Hall’ (the Jubilee Hall, to be precise).

The tables were groaning with the buffet food prepared by members – and what a display it was! Sandwiches, quiche, pastries, cakes, sausage rolls, salad… something for everyone, and many would likely not have wanted much tea later on!

Entertainment was provided by Paul Grundle, a very talented young magician who astonished his table audiences with close-range card tricks, leaving everyone guessing as to precisely how he managed to deceive them with his sleight of hand.

The real star of the show, though, was Leslye Henstock, retiring as Chairperson after four years in the role. As both Barbara Baglee (the incoming Temporary Chair) and Pam Hardwick, Committee Member, mentioned in their Presentation speeches, Leslye has carried Dukeries u3a through some very difficult years – including COVID – and will be sorely missed by all.

This month’s Group of the Month is The Ramblers. Under the leadership of Kate and Stephen Hall, the group enjoys gentle rambles through the local countryside. This month they walked from Edwinstowe to the Centre Tree in Sherwood Forest, then home via Archway House. Later in the month, they walked from ‘The Jug and Glass’ at Langwith Junction through to Cuckney and then returned for a well-earned ‘pie and pint’ at the pub. If strolls like these appeal to you, Kate and Stephen can be reached on 07877 792969.

Finally, a note about the October speaker – Steve LeMottee, the Heritage Officer at Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club will be at the Jubilee Hall in Ollerton on Monday 21st October, with a talk entitled ‘It’s Not Just Cricket’, an exploration of the rich tapestry and history of one of the country’s most famous sports grounds: Trent Bridge. You certainly do not need to be a cricketing buff to enjoy this presentation. Did you know, for example, that the first International staged at Trent Bridge was, in fact, a football match?

The u3a movement is a good way to make new friends, socialise, or learn something new. There are plenty of great activities at Dukeries u3a, which is open to all adults, irrespective of employment status. Annual membership costs £20.00 up to 31st March and includes access to all activities and interest groups. To find out more, go along to up to two of their meetings, held on the third Monday of each month, 12.30pm to 3.00pm, for £1.00 to cover refreshments.
