With Halloween and Bonfire Night in full swing, Retford Textiles Group’s Bev Naylor has produced a series of ideas based around owls and owlets.
Using simple shaped templates and a little imagination it’s possible to produce either a hand sewn or a machine sewn cuddly soft toy, trick or treat sweetie holders or even a fabric tattoo.
Fabric tattoos are really fashionable at present and would be great on a denim jacket, gloves or a scarf. Commercially-made fabric fusing makes attachment easy and professional.
Stuffing the large owls can be done with wadding – or with slight adaptation and a bit of experience the whole idea can be adapted for those special sweets. The bottom edge of the large owl design is gathered and pulled in and covered with a fabric circle which can be sewn or glued into position. A sewn on press stud holds the pointed head piece into position.
Fabric type for these projects varies from thin felt where raw edges don’t need to be considered, to colourful cottons.
