In October, Barbara Beard delivered her enlightening talk ‘The Sinking of the Empress of Ireland’ to the North Notts Association of National Trust Members. The lecture was filled with fascinating facts about the ship’s ill-fated 1914 voyage from Quebec to Liverpool. Although lesser-known than the Titanic, the Empress of Ireland’s sinking was equally tragic, involving human error and resulting in a higher loss of lives.
November’s talk was given by Mike Ogden, a familiar speaker to the association who always brings intriguing insights, on ‘A Palace by a River’.
The association holds monthly meetings with guest speakers from October to April, followed by organised visits in the summer months. These events are managed by a dedicated voluntary committee, which carefully selects topics and destinations of interest. Any surplus funds from subscriptions, meetings, and visits are donated to the National Trust to support projects at local properties.
Membership fees are £30.00 for a single member or £55.00 for a joint membership, covering seven talks and five outings (with outing fees paid separately). Alternatively, a basic subscription is available at £5.00 for a single member and £7.00 for a couple, with each individual talk priced at £6.00. National Trust members are welcome to attend as visitors for a £6.00 fee per talk.
Meetings take place at The Crossing Church in Worksop on the third Wednesday of each month, starting at 7.30pm.
