In 1748, King George II decided to combine his birthday parade each November with the annual military march held in June, a royal tradition that continues to this day in the form of the monarch’s ‘official’ birthday.
Rotherham u3a will celebrate its official birthday on 6th December with a special Christmas lunch, followed by seasonal music from a professional singer.
Founded in August 1994 by 10 enthusiasts, Rotherham u3a began with 60 members and offered five activities. A decade later, membership approached 200, with over 20 activities available. By its 30th anniversary in August this year, membership had nearly reached 500 and included 38 enjoyable activities.
Alongside the pleasure of learning together, members cherish each other’s company, often laughing and sharing stories. Many new acquaintances become lasting friends. Regular socials feature invited speakers, quizzes, and songs from the Ukulele group, always accompanied by plenty of chatting and light refreshments.
Additionally, there are Christmas parties, group celebrations, and events open to all, including the Choir’s annual Christmas concert at Wickersley Methodist Church at 7.00pm on Saturday 7th December. Tickets are priced at £7.00, including refreshments.
For those curious to learn more, individuals are welcome to visit a group, either alone or with a friend, on one or two occasions before deciding if it’s right for them.
