Wheatley Local History Group’s next meeting will take place at the Village Hall in South Wheatley on Monday 17th March, starting at 10.00am. They will welcome Bob Massey who will be talking about the origins of our Spring Bank Holiday and the traditions associated with this holiday weekend.
The Whit (Whitsuntide) bank holiday date was linked to Easter, but was replaced by the Spring Bank Holiday in the early 1970s in order to have a fixed weekend – the last weekend in May. Most, if not all, the traditions associated with Whitsuntide were lost.
This promises to be a very interesting morning.
