The November meeting of Wheatley Local History Group featured a very interesting talk given by Maureen Cooper entitled ‘Poverty, Prosperity and Politics’.
Maureen took attendees back to the early 14th century during the reign of King Edward II, a tumultuous time in Great Britain’s history marked by rebellions from both the Welsh and the Scots. Many in attendance were familiar with Robert the Bruce and the Battle of Culloden.
However, Maureen’s talk focused more on Edward’s French-born wife, Isabella, famously known as the ‘She-Devil of France’. The discussion also covered Alice, who died through the ‘instigation of the devil’, and Lady Ludd. It was a captivating morning.
The next meeting will be held on Monday 20th January, with more details to be provided in next month’s issue of this magazine.
