The Methodist Church in Retford

The Grove and Hallcroft Methodist Churches together form the Methodist presence in Retford. Although they work together, they remain separate, joining forces for some services, to support, socialise, share, and come together for special occasions.

As October begins, the churches are in full swing following the August break, which marks the end of the church year – a time for cleaning, reviewing, planning, and implementing new ideas.

At The Grove Methodist Church, a new group of Mental Health First Aiders has been trained over several weeks by First Aid England. They are available as a point of contact for anyone experiencing poor mental health or emotional distress. While they are not therapists or psychiatrists, they can provide initial support and direct individuals to appropriate help if needed.

The popular Thursday lunches at The Grove, held every Thursday at 12.00pm, are consistently reviewed to maintain the high standard for which they are well known. Attendees can enjoy an excellent, nourishing meal each week while reconnecting with old friends and making new ones.

Last month’s Lunch Event, featuring the film Paddington followed by a delicious lunch and scrumptious sweets, was popular and early registration is recommended for the next Event.

The Tuesday Fellowship meets weekly on Tuesday afternoons, alternating between the churches. This group offers a mix of quizzes, speakers, games, and devotional times, fostering friendship and fellowship.

For those interested in hosting a coffee morning for a favourite charity, Saturday Elevenses may be of interest. Held every Saturday in the vestibule at The Grove from 10.00am to 12.00pm, this event provides an opportunity to hold a coffee morning for a charity. An Open Afternoon is scheduled for Wednesday 30th October from 2.00pm to 6.30pm, which would be an ideal opportunity to visit and explore, or contact Barbara Wilson at 01777 710834 for more information.

For those who prefer a simple cup of coffee or tea and perhaps a toasted tea cake, The Grove offers a friendly atmosphere where every purchase supports a charity.

Bright Hour could be the uplifting experience needed on a gloomy day. The group meets most weeks at The Grove Church on Thursdays at 2.00pm for devotion, usually followed by a speaker. Their varied programme often includes outings.

During times of grief, sadness, loneliness, or despair, a friendly face and a listening ear can be incredibly supportive. The Listening Place meets on the last Saturday of every month from 2.00pm to 4.00pm at The Grove. Attendees will find a welcoming atmosphere and comfort over a cup of tea and a piece of cake. Just come as you are or contact 01777 702573.
