The Arts Society Dukeries

The Arts Society Dukeries meets on the first Wednesday of most months at Carlton Civic Centre for a lecture on a specific art topic. The 2025 programme promises an exciting range of lectures. Alongside these events, members can participate in special study days, enjoy a holiday with the Society, and attend trips to local events and theatres, such as a Gilbert and Sullivan production at Buxton Opera House. Members also receive newsletters and a national magazine.

The first meeting of the year on Wednesday 5th February includes the AGM starting at 10.30am, followed by the lecture at 11.00am. Visitors are welcome to attend.

The lecture is entitled ‘The Legendary Lee Miller’ and will be presented by Anthony Penrose (please note: this lecture will include wartime images which some may find disturbing).

Anthony will explore the life of Lee Miller and her creative collaborations with figures such as Man Ray, Roland Penrose, Pablo Picasso, David E. Sherman, her father Theodore Miller, and her son Anthony Penrose. The presentation provides insight into art history, photography, social commentary, and personal connections.

On Wednesday 5th March, Steve King will present a musical lecture entitled ‘Like a Rolling Stone – Music of the 60s, 1965 to 1969’. This lecture follows a successful earlier session, completing the music of the decade.

Steve will delve into the transformative second half of the 1960s, a period when British music, led by The Beatles, dominated the charts worldwide. In the US, the civil rights and anti-war movements influenced a new generation of musicians, giving rise to electric folk and exponential growth in album sales. This lecture highlights the music of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan.

The Society meets at the Civic Centre, Long Lane, Carlton-in-Lindrick, S81 9AP. Tea and coffee are usually available from 10.00am, but on Wednesday 5th February, refreshments will be served from 9.30am, before the AGM. The AGM starts at 10.30am, with lectures typically running from 11.00am to approximately 12.00pm, depending on questions. Free car parking is available.

Members pay an annual subscription. Visitors are welcome and can pay at the door.
