Retford Rotary Club is always keen to support local charities that are, in turn, providing much needed to support to our local residents.
One such charity is the Aurora Wellbeing Centre, based in the Old Library on Memorial Avenue in Worksop. Aurora provides a wide range of much-needed support services to all Bassetlaw residents affected by cancer and long-term health conditions. Importantly, these support services are also extended to the friends and family of the person affected. Residents access services either through a referral from a healthcare professional or by self-referring directly to the Centre.
Club President, Geoff Matthews, and members of the Retford Rotary Club visited the Aurora Centre towards the end of 2022. During the visit a donation of £1,000 was made from the Percy Laws Memorial Fund to help support their vital work. The visitors were all very impressed by the range of services on offer, the beautiful environment that has been created and the professionalism of the staff.
Keen to see at first hand the facilities on offer to local residents, another visit took place at the end of January and another £340 was presented to the Centre, funds raised through members’ donations in lieu of giving each other Christmas cards.
Members are very mindful that on 24th February it was a year since Russia invaded Ukraine. Retford Rotary Club continues to try to provide direct support to people in Ukraine, and particularly through Rotary contacts in Lviv.
The Club has previously sent money, through a Ukrainian Rotary Club, to buy first aid and medical supplies. Most recently the Club applied for a grant from the Rotary Foundation to provide thermal clothing. As winter approached there had been specific requests for help with warm winter clothing, and the Retford donation became part of a larger consignment of 11000 items that has been delivered to Lviv over the last few months.
For more information on this please visit the Retford Rotary Club Facebook page.
Members of the Club are now busy planning the fundraising events that will take place during the coming year and look forward, with the help of the local community, to continuing their support of the many local and international projects with which they are involved.
