Retford u3a – Learn, Laugh, Live

Retford u3a has a fascinating talk on Thursday 22nd August at 1.30pm at The Well in Retford about local medical heroes.

Dr Tim Gray of The East Midlands Immediate Care Scheme (EMICS) is one of a network of volunteer doctors with specialist training in pre-hospital emergency medicine who assist East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) at the scene of life-threatening emergencies. EMICS doctors provide advanced specialist skills at the point of accident or injury, where they are needed most. They are the ones who ride in the helicopters and save lives when there is no time to get patients to hospital.

Last month, 19th July saw another Big Night Out at Retford Golf Club. 64 members sat down to a luxurious meal and were entertainingly bamboozled by Sue Paul’s devilishly difficult table quiz again. Retford Golf Club has a private gated car park, so, if you want to book a place for the next one on 11th October (date to be confirmed), speak to Sue Paul or Bryan Gladstone at the August General Meeting or contact Sue through the website.

Military History offers an opportunity on Wednesday 14th August to visit Bletchley Park and see where and learn how our codebreakers and computer scientists shortened the war and helped launch the computer age. Contact group leader Roy Evans to see if any places remain.

Whether or not you are a u3a member, why not attend the 8th August Military History meeting at Hallcroft Community Centre (10.00am) to meet Roy and book a place? Wing Commander Adrian Sumner will be giving a talk on the 75th anniversary of the end of the Berlin Airlift on the day.

Looking further ahead, on 28th November the u3a is holding an Interest Group Showcase. It will be a free opportunity for members and the public to see and hear what goes on in meetings. Whether or not you are already a member, why not make a note to go down and find out about how you can find new interests and hobbies to enrich your life?

Look for further details in next month’s Retford Life or on the u3a website. The new membership year started in April, so November is a good time for potential new members to meet the group. There is no charge, so Retford Life readers looking for new pastimes and friends are welcome to attend meetings.
