The beautiful display of daffodils throughout town heralds the arrival of spring and reminds Lions that they are coming into a very busy period in their calendar. With charter day on Monday 2nd May, members sold yellow ducks for the famous duck race which takes place on the day. Red duck sales were again successful; these are sold to local businesses, with the opportunity to donate £1,000 to a charity of their choice.
Even as we welcome spring, the Lions are looking forward to their Christmas collections, with work being carried out on the sleigh. Refurbishment will be ongoing throughout the summer.
Members spent a lively evening in March learning everything about sausage making. 20lbs of sausages were made on the evening, which were then barbecued and served to all present.
Easter baskets were distributed throughout the area and won through raffles.
In aid of the crisis in Ukraine, Retford Lions distributed collection tins to shops in the town. The collected funds will be sent to aid the relief effort.
As part of their ongoing CPR and defibrillator training, Lions started sessions again with an evening at Stephen House on 13th April.
Lions collected for Marie Curie in Morrisons during March, collecting more than £1,000.
Upcoming events are Lions’ annual golf day on 3rd July. This event is now fully subscribed with 40 teams entered.
One of the Lions’ lesser-known competitions for children is the ‘Peace Poster’ event. This year Thrumpton and Dunham schools will be participating to create a poster, on the very relevant theme of Peace, and a win an opportunity to go forward to the national finals.
