Retford Cricket Club (RCC) is more than just a cricket club, it’s a place where generations come together to share a love of the game, enjoy the outdoors, and build lifelong friendships. Whether you’re a seasoned player or someone who’s never picked up a bat, there’s a place for you.
For the Buchanan family, RCC has become a second home. George started bringing his children to Friday night sessions, watching them develop through Kwik Cricket to Under 15s. Before long, he found himself lending a hand with coaching, which led to him earning an ECB coaching qualification and, unexpectedly, being asked to play again. After 20 years away from the game, it felt daunting, but with the club’s support, he rediscovered his love for cricket. His son, Guy, and daughter, Tess, have grown into excellent cricketers, starting in the Sunday Development Team before moving into senior teams including occasional appearances in the Saturday First Team. For the Buchanans, the club has been a focal point for health, wellbeing, friendship, and personal development.
Nothing beats the thrill of walking out onto the pitch alongside your son and daughter, joining the team huddle and spending the day together on the field. Dad, George, especially enjoys watching Guy and Tess bowl, and often finds himself umpiring at square leg with an ideal close-up view as they bat. One unforgettable moment saw the pair of siblings hold the last wicket for 10 tense overs, frustrating the opposition and playing a crucial role in securing victory. Their resilience, smart play, and determination to stay in until the innings’ end epitomises what the club is all about—teamwork, perseverance, and the sheer joy of the game.
Why not take a stroll down to the club on a Friday evening? You’ll find a warm welcome, friendly faces, and the opportunity to be part of something special at the family club; Retford Cricket Club isn’t just about sport—it’s about belonging, and we’d love for you to be part of it.
