News from the Museums of Tuxford

September sees the annual Heritage Open Days campaign taking place from 6th to 15th September and the Walks of Life Museum in Tuxford is open every day from 11.00am to 4.00pm. Go along and see their carts and the connections though history.

A great example is the stone mason’s cart. Barbara Parry has shared with the Museum the history of her great great uncle Sir Abraham Woodiwass, a stonemason who was instrumental in forming major railway lines. He was knighted by Queen Victoria. The Network Rail Innovation Centre have arranged some open track days in conjunction with the Museum – starting with Wednesday 4th September, 10.00am to 2.00pm. Places are limited so to book contact Diane at the Museum.

Other events in September are:

  • Saturday 7th September, 10.00am to 2.00pm: Charity Day when they are helping local charities to promote their cause with free stalls and refreshments.
  • Friday 13th September, 2.00pm: talk on China and connections with the museum. Free event with refreshments.
  • Friday 27th September, 10.00am: Macmillan coffee morning

The Museum of the Horse is open during Heritage Open Days – Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 4.00pm, and on Saturday, 9.30am to 1.30pm. Last entry is an hour before closing .In celebration of Heritage Open Days, a talk on the history of Tuxford coaching and the development of the roads has been so popular that it was fully subscribed. At the Museum of the Horse, see an exhibition of work by the internationally known local horse painter Malcolm Coward from Sunday 22nd September until Saturday 12th October. This will run concurrently with the Tuxford and coaching exhibition.
