National Holocaust Memorial Day

by | 19 January 2018 | Community Event, Heritage, Retford

Along with people all round Britain and the world, Churches Together In Retford and The Mayor and Charter Trustees of Retford invite the civic organisations and people of Retford and the surrounding villages to a Civic Service to commemorate National Holocaust Memorial Day.

The service will be held at St Swithun’s Church, Cannon Square, Retford at 12.00pm on 27th January. During the service, there will be an opportunity to light a candle in memory of the victims of the Holocaust of 1935 to 1945 and remember the victims of other acts of genocide of the 20th and 21st centuries. Light refreshments will be served in the Lady Chapel after the service, which will last about 45 minutes. There will be a poster exhibition and other material about the Holocaust in the church, which will remain open until 3.00pm for private prayer, reflection and the lighting of candles.

In a world which has seen a return to hatred and fear, and which is still war torn, it is more important than ever to remember the lessons of history and to commit ourselves to stand up to hatred and persecution.
