As a charity based around rehoming dogs, Jerry Green Dog Rescue prides itself on the work it does to find dogs new families. However, over the past few years it has started to become more present in the community.
The charity really wants to do more to keep dogs in their homes with the ones they love. Molly the two-year-old Boston terrier has a loving home where she is very happy, but her owner was considering rehoming her as he couldn’t walk her anymore.
He went to Jerry Green Dog Rescue for help, and the East Yorkshire Community Support Manager is now walking Molly, free of charge, to ensure this lovely pair can stay together. It would have been heart-breaking to see Molly and her owner split apart, when she has such a wonderful home.
This is something the charity will be growing in the East Yorkshire area and, with the help of volunteers, hopefully more dogs like Molly can stay in their homes.
The Nottinghamshire team has been working with Junos Women’s Aid for emergency boarding. This means should a woman need to go into emergency housing and wants to keep her dog but cannot take it with her yet, Jerry Green offers emergency boarding until she can take the dog into her new home. This helps so many women have peace of mind that their dog is safe at a time when they may feel very overwhelmed.
The Nottinghamshire team was able to surprise staff and volunteers at the Beacon Project in Mansfield with a donation of dog food, treats and toys. The Beacon Project helps support homeless and vulnerably housed adults.
A representative of the Beacon Project said: “Many of our service users have dogs, and even a few cats… especially if they’re sofa surfing with friends. Often they choose to feed their companions in preference to themselves!” Jerry Green Dog Rescue was happy to help support another local charity.
What does the future look like for community support? Jerry Green will be offering free flea and worming drop-in days, as well as workshops and drop-in training sessions, to help those in the local community. Look out for more information on their Facebook page and website.
If you are interested in any of the above or you would like someone to talk to about your dog or situation, just contact your local centre and they will be more than happy to help.
