Friends of Milton Mausoleum

During June, the Friends of Milton Mausoleum organised two events with differing outcomes.

This is the second year they have successfully worked with the family at Lound Hall on a fundraising event. This year they were not favoured by the weather, bringing occasional heavy rain showers during the day. However, they are resilient and the afternoon was well attended, with three talks conducted in the Hall, stallholders receiving a steady stream of visitors, a great interest in the beekeeper and his different types of honey, and also the croquet lawn was well populated.

A team of players from the Gainsborough Croquet Club explained the rules and ways of playing the sport. It can be traced back to 14th century France and is also popular in the USA and Canada, although some say that it originated in Ireland. Maybe you will know the current name of the original All England Croquet Club based in Wimbledon?

The event brought about a very successful day, resulting in another generous amount of fundraising towards the upkeep of the historic Milton Mausoleum.

On Saturday 22nd June at the Mausoleum, the Summer Music Concert featuring a ladies’ a cappella choir, Harmonix. The building certainly leant itself to this genre of choral singing. The audience enjoyed wine and canapes on the lawn during the interval and the concert was concluded with a great raffle and quarterly draw of the £100 Prize Draw.

Looking forward, the Friends’ next event will be the popular Christmas Gifts and Crafts Fayre held in the Mausoleum on Saturday 9th November, 10.00am to 3.30pm. In addition to lots of new gift ideas, they we have hot and cold refreshments and a raffle. Free entry. Go and see the monument of Lady Georgiana pictured with her twins; unfortunately Lady Georgiana died shortly after their birth. Letters have gone out to proposed stallholders and the Friends value your support for this event and look forward to seeing you on Saturday 9th November.

Milton Mausoleum (NG22 0PW) is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.
