ComuSpace is a new project in Bassetlaw aiming to help people gain access to technology and receive the support needed to utilise online services.
ComuSpace runs support groups from Bassetlaw Food Bank’s Hive in Manton, Morrisons’ Community Room in Retford, and two of Bassetlaw District Council’s Independent Living Centres.
Digital exclusion is a growing concern, leaving many people isolated from essential services. Across towns in the UK, including Retford and Worksop, many banks have either closed or are planning to close. Services that previously operated from council offices or town halls have either reduced their physical presence or withdrawn entirely in favour of telephone or online services.
A significant number of people affected by these changes report having no access to online banking, email, or the ability to print out forms for signing. Those who cannot use online services are denied the privileges available to those who can.
ComuSpace aims to address this issue and reduce digital exclusion. With the cost-of-living crisis still apparent, the number of people affected is likely to increase. Many are cutting back to save money, and as many as one million people disconnected their broadband last year due to financial constraints. Others affected by digital exclusion may lack the skills, confidence, or support needed to use the internet, while some face all of these barriers simultaneously.
Anyone who may benefit from ComuSpace’s services, or knows someone who would, is encouraged to contact them on 01777 589480, attend one of the groups listed above, or visit their website or Facebook page for more information.
