Retford U3A zoom away
I wonder how many of you did what we did over New Year? This year we celebrated New Year’s Eve in Moscow, then went to bed. They are two hours ahead of us, so we were tucked up by 10.00pm. That’s very strange for us as usually we tend to celebrate New Year more than Christmas in our household. We catered for 10 people at lunch last 1st January and toasting each other on both Christmas morning and New Year’s Day was not quite the same on Zoom.
Last month I mentioned that Retford’s U3A support the town’s ‘Muddy Fork’ group and on 25th February at our next virtual General Meeting via Zoom, Dominic Schad or our secretary Pippa Ramsey will be giving us a presentation about their work carried out at the Idle Valley Nature Reserve.
You must be getting bored with me saying this each month, but Retford U3A are managing to keep in contact with most of our members and the gardening group are looking forward, as are the walking and cycling groups, to the warmer weather. Do you remember the mini heat wave we had last February? At home we had about 30% more sunshine than in February the year before. How do I know this? I monitor the energy generated by our solar panels on a monthly basis (I really must get out more!).
What would we do without Zoom? At Retford U3A we have at least 10 of our interest groups using it on a weekly, two weekly or monthly basis. As well as the gardening group, the poetry, photography, wine appreciation, French and Spanish conversation and the military history groups all meet via Zoom. Family history will also be starting later this spring. This will be done on a one-to- one basis.
Unfortunately, it does not look likely that we will be meeting in person before September at the earliest but new members are welcome. Have a look at our website. There are lists of interest groups with contact details of the group’s leaders, but if you want to, you can always contact our membership secretary for more information – Sue Paul on 01777 705008.
