The Workhouse Players are back with their festive (definitely not a pantomime) play, A Christmas Turkey, written by Corringham playwright Max Jones.
The setting is Ye Olde Merrie King of England Carvery, which is far from a merry place at Christmas. Head chef Brian, sleep-deprived, is plagued by vivid nightmares of murderous turkeys straight out of Nightmare on Elm Street.
Restaurant manager Heather copes by imagining increasingly creative ways of ‘removing’ Mr Trevor from this world, complete with sketches in her notebook. She’s even considering adding a poetry section for a touch of culture.
Bob, on the other hand, is usually lost in his own thoughts, filled with wild theories and secret desires. Waitress Tracey simply wants a day off – she’s not fussy whether it’s because they’ve run out of turkeys, there’s a staff shortage, a food poisoning outbreak, or even if the place burns down, as long as she gets a break.
Meanwhile, junior chef Gavin is desperate for someone, anyone, to help him with the vegetables. All the while, Mr Trevor, along with his irritable little dog, runs the restaurant with all the efficiency of someone schooled by a dreadful 1980s management training manual.
A Christmas Turkey is a play about turkey nightmares, stolen mince pies, secret desires, rhyming management-speak… and a touch of murder.
