Scunthorpe Concert Band – a Phoenix from the Flames

Following the imposition of the Covid lockdowns and restrictions, Scunthorpe Concert Band had reached a low point in its 20-year history. The band had not been able to rehearse for almost two years. They had no Musical Director, only 12 players and needed a new accessible ground floor rehearsal room.

The committee took on the challenge of rebuilding the Band by appointing their talented Trombonist Christian Widdowson as Musical Director, under the guidance of ex-Army Bandmaster Ian Mitchell. An excellent rehearsal room was located at Ashby Wesley Methodist Church and rehearsals began again in earnest in October 2021.

Soon after new players were attracted to the Band and concerts were once again being performed. In 12 months, the playing strength increased to 30 players.

Since then, the Band has gone from strength to strength and is performing at its peak once more. In October 2023 they performed their Bach to Broadway concert to a packed audience in Scunthorpe’s Plowright Theatre, to great acclaim.

Scunthorpe Concert Band has a growing reputation for producing excellent performances and is aiming to reach new heights in 2024.

To this end the band is looking to recruit new players on the following instruments: Flute, Clarinet, French Horn, Trombone and Percussion. For more information, contact Ken Wardman on 07591 591504.
