For the past few years, 6th Gainsborough Sea Scouts have created a memorial to commemorate the service of those who helped Britain’s war efforts and this has been added to over the years. For 2024 they decided to add a Land Girl to their display and asked parents for help to create a silhouette of a Land Girl. Lynne Hodgson, who has had experience of creating art works and participating in local lantern parades, offered to help out and together with daughters Holly, who is a Beaver, and Hazel, who is a Scout, they created this stunning Land Girl.
Lynne said: “I also wanted to incorporate the Avro Lancaster, which is a big part of Lincolnshire’s and our family’s history. My Dad, who was born in 1942, grew up in Glentworth and remembers them frequently flying overhead and has always had a passion for the plane.”
Holly and Hazel have named the Land Girl Madge, the name by which their great nanna, Marjorie, was better known.
Using the iconic wartime Land Girl recruiting poster as her inspiration, Lynne used AI to create the design, printed it out life size, alongside designs for the Lancaster, pitchfork, poppies and wheat and transferred them to the board. A jigsaw was used to cut out the design and special attention was made to ensure that the small details like the wheat and poppies were realistic. Hazel and Holly then got down to painting the silhouette with Hazel finishing off the project by providing the colour and details to the poppies. The whole piece was then varnished to provide protection against the autumn weather.
