The Lea Women’s Institute recently took a moment to focus on the most fundamental of involuntary reflexes: breathing. Terry Mellors, an instructor in the Wim Hof and Buteyko methods, demonstrated how crucial breathing is for our mental state. His demonstration of how important breathing is to our state of mind was a breath of fresh air into the soul.

Many people rush through life, relying on their bodies to manage breathing automatically. However, the average person takes about 24,000 breaths a day, and there are ways to make those breaths more meaningful.

Terry advised: “Take it slow! Keep your mouth closed and breathe through your nose so the air can be filtered, pressurised, and warmed. Use your diaphragm, which makes your tummy rise. Exhale through your nose, and try this simple exercise for a minute, counting how many breaths you take.”

After comparing numbers, the experiment was repeated with the attendees instructed to halve the number of breaths. Terry then asked the group if they felt different; the quiet murmurs of agreement were telling. Everyone noted feeling calmer and more grounded.

It seems that taking a moment to pause and centre oneself could improve how we manage life’s challenges. The Wim Hof Method offers a practical approach for reconnecting with oneself, others, and nature. To learn more, visit www.thebreathingeffect.co.uk.
