Gainsborough Christmas Day Lunch forced to cancel

For the first time in 45 years the Gainsborough free traditional Christmas Day lunch, for those people who would otherwise be spending Christmas Day alone, will not be going ahead this year.
The organiser, Stan Foster, said: “It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I had to make this decision but due to the current situation with the coranavirus pandemic, Government guidelines and the impending winter season the safety and wellbeing of the people attending and the volunteers helping is paramount.
“The entire purpose of the event has always been to bring people together to celebrate the day and enjoy the festivities in the company of others rather than being alone in isolation. This annual celebration is only made possible by the generosity of local businesses and the community who support the event so generously year after year.
“I have been constantly reviewing the situation and have tried rethinking the event to make it happen but with the likelihood of 75 people attending and the social distancing and other measures required it just is not possible this year.
“It is a very difficult time for all but even more difficult for those that are alone. I would urge people to think of others and if you know of anyone that is alone, just a little of your time would make all the difference to them.
“By this time next year I will be happily preparing for the Christmas Day 2021 event. In the meantime, I hope that everyone stays safe and well.”
