The November talk was a highlight of the month for Gainsborough and District u3a members. Local farmer Craig Williamson shared a fascinating insight into the life of a farmer, coinciding with the national focus on inheritance tax protests. Throughout his talk, Craig’s positivity shone through as he described the joys and challenges of his work, despite the hurdles presented by climate, government policies, and other factors. His passion for farming was evident, and his willingness to answer questions candidly added to the appreciation of those who attended.
The December Christmas party will have taken place by the time this goes to press, with approximately 60 members anticipated to enjoy quizzes, singing, and refreshments. In January, members can look forward to musical entertainment by Roger Browne, and a reminder that annual subscriptions are also due during that month.
The visit to Harewood House at the end of November proved a resounding success. A group of 16 members departed from the Leisure Centre aboard a luxury minibus on a day blessed with perfect sunshine glinting on snow – though Harewood itself was snow-free.
The much-anticipated light show exceeded expectations, featuring creative displays such as dancing angels on a piano, talking plates, and a mesmerising moving kaleidoscope on the ceiling. Visitors were captivated by living flower books, moving flower paintings, and a playful exchange between a young Queen Victoria and Lord Canning, who lamented the loss of his record as the shortest-serving Prime Minister to Liz Truss.
The clever and entertaining displays were further enhanced by the tranquil atmosphere in the house, allowing everyone to explore at leisure. Even the grounds offered a treat, with red kites putting on a spectacular display under the gleaming sun.
The u3a extends thanks to Carol for once again organising this delightful trip, even though last year was meant to be her final one!
