The October meeting of Gainsborough and District u3a featured an engaging talk by Bernard Bale, who shared stories from his extensive career in the media, spanning from the 1960s to the present day. With a background covering various aspects of news, particularly sports, Bernard provided interesting insights into the current state of the press and the role of a well-regarded national news agency. Speaking without notes, he kept the audience captivated throughout.
In November, local farmer Craig Williamson presented a talk titled ‘Down on the Farm’, and the December meeting will feature the club’s Christmas party, with quizzes and carol singing, starting at 10.00am. Food and drinks will be provided. Tickets for the event, priced at £3.00, must be purchased in advance.
The new Craft Group recently held a successful decoupage workshop, enjoyed by all participants, who were delighted with their final pieces.
The Buccaneers group has also been active. In late October, a small group enjoyed a Treasure Trail in Louth, exploring the town’s charming streets and traditional shops. With street names like Butcher Lane and Pawnbrokers Passage, the town’s historical character made for a memorable visit. Some members plan to return. In November, The Buccaneers also attended a ballet performance of A Christmas Carol in Sheffield and visited Harewood House to see its Christmas lights display, designed by the same team that created the popular ‘talking plates’ and ‘gossiping fireplaces’ seen on their last visit.
