Beckingham Bowls Club

Following the end of season closure of Beckingham’s Bowling Green on 27th September, Beckingham Bowls Club members scarified their Green. On the weekend of the London Marathon, the main end of season maintenance was carried out. Starting at 7.15am on 2nd October, their contractor carried out Verti-Draining of the Bowling Green, punching 6inch (15cm) holes in the surface to allow air to reach the grass roots and also ease compaction. The following morning, again at 7.15am, the contractor carried out re-seeding by Disc-Seeder which sows the grass seed into mini furrows to enable very good and early germination.
Subsequent October weather has been ideal for germination, with some steady rain coupled with warm days and evenings. Within 10 days the new grass started to show, and on 29th October, it was very lush and sufficiently strong to cut.
The usual winter maintenance will follow and Spring Verti-Draining has been booked for late March 2022 in readiness for the playing season opening in mid / late April. In addition to the maintenance of the bowling green, all four hedges surrounding it have been cut both sides and the Club are grateful to local farmer Mike Tomlinson for cutting the two sides adjacent to the farm field and football pitch, which are very difficult for members to access.
The Club’s Presentation Evening, enjoyed annually in October by members, did not take place this year. This is very disappointing and the thinking is that the presentations of trophies for 2021 should be included in the 2022 Annual Lunch, normally held in March at Gainsborough Golf Club. The Gainsborough Bowls League Presentation Evening also did not materialise.
