After a year’s absence, Beckingham Bowls Club’s Open Pairs Gala Day was held this year on 21st July. The event was sponsored by Cliff Bradley and Sons Funeral Directors Ltd of Gainsborough and Saxilby, and generous donations for raffle prizes were made by Thonock Park Golf Club Gainsborough, Morrisons Retford and Gainsborough, Bacons of Retford and Ping Europe of Gainsborough.

28 pairs, all from clubs other than Beckingham, competed, each playing five games of six ends in two leagues. The winners of each league played each other in the final, which resulted in a victory for Roy Greenan and John Grooby from Rose Leisure Bowls Club over Peter Cawthorne and Paul Shay from Babworth Road Bowls Club.
The pairs tied after six ends following a close measure, with the Rose Leisure pair taking the extra end. The play off for third and fourth places resulted in a victory for Bob Langmead and Dave Wright from Rose over Everton Bowls Club’s Pamela Hamer and John Brough.

The day started with bacon and sausage butties, followed by food and refreshments prepared by Beckingham members and their partners in the Village Hall. It was an excellent day of bowling and social gathering, resulting in a healthy profit for the Club to contribute towards the cost of the autumn / winter bowling green maintenance.
