Find out more about Rotherham’s history at guided walks being run by the Rotherham District Civic Society between March and November 2025.
Discovering Rotherham
Rotherham as a Minster Town has a lot to offer. Founded in the Middle Ages, its name originated from old English ‘Homestead on the Rother’. Throughout its history, it has marked it presence through its people, events and places.
The stories need to be told so why not go along and meet the Society’s volunteer guides and explore our fantastic past. These Rotherham Guided Town Walks leave Clifton Park Museum every Sunday from 2nd March to 30th November at 1.00pm.
The walk will be at a gentle pace covering the main areas around the Town Centre. There will be some kerbs and uneven surfaces but the majority of the walk will be along pedestrianised walkways.
Blue Plaque Trail
The Rotherham District Civic Society has unveiled 31 Blue Plaques to date. Now is your opportunity to join a monthly free guided tour of the Town Centre Blue Plaque Trail.
Taking place on the last Sunday of every month from March to November, these walks leave Rotherham Town Hall at 1.00pm. The first of 2025 takes place on Saturday 29th March.
Previous walkers have left Tripadvisor reviews including:
- “I would definitely recommend this tour.” – Sue
- “Fun and interesting tour. I’ve lived in Rotherham all my life and I learned quite a few things I didn’t know about the town and some of the heroes it has produced. I think it was pitched a good level for laypeople like myself who aren’t history buffs and it didn’t get too bogged down at any point.”
- “After the free guided walk “I am filled with Civic Pride”
