As winter sets in, the darker days bring all the home comforts of the season, including hot fires and slow-cooked stews. Ravenfield Ponds is a lovely place to stretch your legs and stroll around the park, and depending on the weather, the ponds may be adorned with a winter coat.
Despite the chill, the anglers are a hardy bunch. By December the winter league programme will be well underway and, if last year’s results are anything to go by, it shouldn’t deter them from catching some great fish. Alan Tomkins, the match organiser, has done a fantastic job throughout the summer and continues to do so during the winter months.
It is also important to acknowledge the unsung hero who keeps the park in top form: park warden Mr Keith Rhodes. He has dedicated over 40 years to ensuring the park remains in great shape for everyone on a daily basis.
Many summer anglers may stay away, but winter brings better roach fishing, both at the park and along the canal. Access to the stretch of the River Don will become easier once the Himalayan balsam has died down. The river is known to produce chub, roach, and bream, with the possibility of a big perch or even a fat winter barbel.
The canal at Kilnhurst will be open for those wishing to try their luck at catching a good winter pike, with access available from Wharf Road or Carlisle Street at Swinton. The Mexborough stretch remains underutilised and could hold some excellent winter fishing.
