The Retford and District branch of The Royal British Legion will launch this year’s Poppy Appeal on 26th October. Following the success of last year, it is hoped that the businesses and residents of Retford, surrounding villages, as well as Harworth and Bircotes, will once again lend their support to this annual fundraising effort in aid of veterans.
Fundraising takes place throughout the year, but the November appeal remains the main event. As usual, there will be a presence in Morrisons and Home Bargains in Retford, as well as supermarkets in Harworth. Many local retailers will also have collecting tins and poppies leading up to the Remembrance weekend in November.
The Retford town Remembrance Sunday event in the Market Square will be held on 10th November from 10.45am, with everyone welcome to attend. If anyone requires a wreath to lay at the war memorial on either day, they should contact Ann Hickman on 01777 818993.
There will be no Act of Remembrance on 11th November this year.
Like any organisation, the local branch relies on volunteers. This year, they are particularly in need of volunteers to assist with all aspects of the service, as well as individuals interested in serving on the committee. It is important to note that you do not need to have served in the armed forces to become a member of The Royal British Legion.
