Who hasn’t marvelled at the sight of a starling murmuration at least once?
A swirling mass of birds forming incredible shapes in the sky, separating and reforming in fluid movements, only to suddenly vanish as they drop into the reeds. How do they know when to do that? How do they never collide? And what brings them together in the first place?
Enter Kathryn Cooper, a photographer, artist, and scientist, who will be the guest speaker for the North Notts Group of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust in November. Kathryn’s award-winning photography will help unveil some of the mysteries behind starling murmurations. Her work has earned her numerous accolades, including being shortlisted for the Sony World Photography Awards Professional Series.
Kathryn, who began her career developing medical imaging techniques, now applies these methods to her nature photography.
She takes multiple successive exposures and overlays them onto the same print, revealing movement and behaviour that might otherwise remain unseen. Her images offer insights into collaborative behaviour and complex systems, relevant not only to wildlife but to everyday life.
This is truly a talk not to be missed, combining cutting-edge science, local wildlife, and stunning art.
The meeting will be held at the Idle Valley Centre on Thursday 14th November, starting at 7.15pm. Entry is £3.00, which includes tea and biscuits. Everyone is welcome, and there’s no need to book.
