Cards and congratulations

Receiving greetings for a special occasion is always appreciated, especially when the card is handmade by the sender.

The oldest-known greeting card in existence is a Valentine, written in 1415 by the Duke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London. By the mid-15th century, handmade New Year and Valentine cards were being exchanged across Europe.

Nowadays, card-making is a hobby enjoyed by thousands of enthusiasts in groups across the UK. Rotherham u3a’s Card-Making group meets at Herringthorpe United Reformed Church each Friday between 10.00am and 12.00pm and welcomes newcomers at any time, from novices to experienced crafters. Members learn from each other in a friendly, encouraging atmosphere, exchanging design ideas and demonstrating the use of different techniques and tools. The results are impressive!

No handmade card, but hearty congratulations nevertheless to the Rotherham u3a Walking Netball group as it celebrates its first anniversary. Despite its name, this popular game guarantees a good cardiac and whole-body workout, with plenty of laughter and friendly exchanges along the way.

Playing Walking Netball improves balance, coordination, reaction time, and muscle tone. It’s a wonderful way to keep fit and active. Loose, comfortable clothing and non-slip trainers are essential. New players are welcome to go along to any session and try the game. From 24th November, games will take place each Monday between 1.00pm and 2.00pm at St Anne’s Leisure Centre.
