The National Holocaust Centre and Museum is in rural Nottinghamshire, a county that was rich with coal seams and their subsequent collieries, near to Ollerton, Bevercotes, Bilsthorpe, Thoresby, Clipstone, Welbeck and Creswell local mining communities.
On Sunday 16th July at 1.00pm, the Centre is delighted to welcome author, historian and ex-miner Dr David Amos to talk about the local community history.
David will offer his talk about the 2019 Nottingham Trent University Project and exhibition ‘Dealing with the Past: Coal, Community and Change 1965-2015’.
David was one of the founders of Mine2Minds Education, a not-for-profit community interest organisation supporting digital arts and humanities in former mining communities. Mine2Minds Education offer seminars, workshops and training to increase cultural awareness, improved digital skills and bring about positive change in areas that have been adversely affected by structural unemployment due to the process of deindustrialisation.
Transferring heritage and learning activities to commercial spaces such as community centres, pubs and museums, like The National Holocaust Museum, has proved highly popular and is seen as an opportunity for wider engagement, increasing awareness and sharing what can be a challenging and sometimes contentious subject matter.
Bilsthorpe Heritage Museum will also be there, showing artefacts from their vast collection of mining memorabilia and offering you the chance to see their oral history video which captures tales from local ex-miners about their working experiences.
