7th Retford’s youngest section has been busy this term working towards different badges. On order are Experiment (Science), Explore (find out more about the area), Safety, Sports and My Skills. They too have had fun with food and have worked towards their Cook activity badge.
Currently the Beaver Scout Colony is full, but Kirsty Matthews, their section leader, will be happy to take details to put on a waiting list. She would also love to hear from anyone who would be interested in helping with the group. If you are aged between 14 and 18 you can volunteer as a Young Leader or for the service section of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme. If you are over 18, you can volunteer as an Occasional Helper or Sectional Assistant or an Assistant Leader.
Cooking outdoors on open fires has been popular with the Cubs and Scouts, making pitta pockets, chocolate bananas and oranges and smores. The Scouts had fun in the river, trying to cross a rope bridge and with inflatable canoes. Leaders made an assault course for both the Cubs and Scouts; all went home a little dirtier and some wet!
The Cubs had a ‘not so much’ sleepover at the Scout Hut in June. They went on a canal bank walk heading out to Whitsunday Pie Lock and walk back to play in Kings Park. When they got back they watched a late night movie, had pizza and then sleep (well, some did sleep). They all got up very early on Saturday morning for their morning exercise and games in the park.
Both Cubs and Scouts would appreciate some more regular adult helpers / leaders as the wonderful young leaders have all now moved on to new pastures – to university or college or full-time jobs. Some still help out when they are at home.
Cannon Choughs Explorers have been hiking, cooking, playing games and other fun activities. This age group is very much heads down for GCSE and A-Level exams at this time of year, but Explorers is a good weekly break from revision and exams. The minimum age is 13.5 years old up to their 18th birthday.
The Scouts, Explorers and various adults are heading off to Summer Camp at the end of July for six nights at Kibblestone campsite in Staffordshire.
Any enquiries for the group – for children or adults – please contact Hazel on 7thretford@gmail.com.
