Local heritage, live jazz, a fun family concert and more!

Running alongside Worksop Library’s ‘Breaking the News’ exhibition (24th February to 19th April) is ‘Exploring Local Newspapers’ – a free workshop taking place on Saturday 12th March at 10.30am to 12.30pm.

Did you know that Worksop Library has the Worksop Guardian newspaper on microfilm going back to 1896? Other historical newspapers from all over the country are available on the online British Newspaper Archive, which can be accessed for free in all Inspire libraries, and at Nottinghamshire Archives. Find out more in this small group session at the library, where two of Inspire’s Heritage Librarians will demonstrate the range and variety of local newspapers available on microfilm and online. Places are free but booking is essential.

On Saturday 19th March at 10.00am to 2.00pm, join Leicester Print Workshop tutor and professional artist Theo Miller for ‘Headline of Your Life: Letterpress Workshop’. Letterpress is enjoying a revival and is now an ever-growing craft, hobby and contemporary art form. This is your opportunity to have a taste of the traditional printer’s world, work with a contemporary Fine Artist and discover the pleasure of this wonderful print technique to create the ‘headline of your life’. The cost of this professional arts workshop is £40.00, with all materials included. Only eight places are available, so booking is essential.

This month’s ‘Jazz Steps’ at the Library features the Sara Dowling Quartet on Tuesday 15th March at 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Sara Dowling is an exciting singer on the UK jazz scene, in the tradition of the jazz greats such as Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan but with her own 21st century energy. Well-regarded in the UK and touring major jazz festivals in Europe, Sara’s mastery of the Great American Song Book is coupled with a contemporary edge. Tickets are £12.00 and booking is highly advised.

Don’t miss the Chesterfield Canal heritage talk on Wednesday 16th March at 2.00pm. John Lower from the Chesterfield Canal Trust will tell the story of the canal from its construction in 1777 to near dereliction in the 1950s, when the 26-mile section between West Stockwith and Worksop was barely navigable. Fundraising began for restoration and the work continues, with the aim of completion by the 250th anniversary in 2027. This talk is expected to be very popular so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Fun family concert, ‘Spectacular Strings’, is taking place on Saturday 26th March at 1.00pm and will be packed with your favourite strings-based tunes! Join Inspire Music’s String group as they play a selection of musical works and explore the wonderful world of the violin, viola and cello. After the performance meet the musicians and try out some of the instruments for yourself. The concert is suitable for children aged five to 11 and their families. Tickets are £3.00 for library members and £6.00 for non-library members. Booking is highly advised.
