On 25th November Worksop Archaeological and Local History Society held its AGM, which covered the past two years in view of the COVID situation. The treasurer gave details of the accounts, followed by Malcolm Dolby giving his Chairman’s Report.

Various matters were discussed, including a change of venue (unfortunately the Station Hotel can no longer accommodate the Society on a regular basis), a change of meeting times, publicity and future publications. The existing chairman and committee were then re-elected. Speakers originally planned for 2020 are to be contacted to see if they are still able speak in the coming year.

Malcolm then gave a photographic presentation, showing a selection of digitised old photographs from his collection of places in North Nottinghamshire. This included aerial views showing ancient roads discovered through crop marks, rivers which had changed their course over many years and isolated earlier settlements and evidence of early castles and buildings. Many buildings which still exist have an interesting history – changes of use, changes of architecture, and alterations which uncovered centuries-old timber frames, windows and doorways. As always, this was most interesting and is one of the most popular subjects at the meetings.

A new venue has now been agreed with The Golden Ball on Dock Road / Victoria Square, where the next meeting on Thursday 27th January will take the form of an Olde Worksop afternoon. Please note that this and February’s meeting will take place at 2.30pm to avoid members having to turn out on dark winter evenings; evening meetings will then return in March. There is adequate car parking at the rear of the building. Meetings cost £2.00 and usually take place on the fourth Thursday of the month, with new members and visitors are always welcome. Membership is only £6.00. Please visit the group’s website for more details.
