Debut at swim meet

Bassetlaw Swim Squad

Bassetlaw Swim Squad is making its Swim England Winter Meet debut. The squad’s Jessica Gillatt, of Retford Swimming Club and Bubble Design, is taking part in the 100m BR while Lucy Gratton of Worksop College and Worksop Dolphins is competing in the 100m individual medley. They are two of more than 850 swimmers to compete in the event, which sees 160 clubs take part from across the country. read more

Any new year resolutions to give up chocolate have probably been abandoned by now. Good thing too. Fairtrade Fortnight — 25th February to 10th March — is focusing on cocoa producers this year and needs your support. ‘Fairtrade for Bassetlaw’ activists are currently looking at what will be going on locally and hoping that the district will embrace the message with enthusiasm. read more

The New Year saw the Frack Free Tinker Lane protesters celebrate since before Christmas. This is because the fracking company Igas announced on 17th December that the planned drilling depth had been reached, however, disappointingly the Bowland Shale had not been found! read more

With late blooms still in flower and catkins bursting through, the temptation might be difficult to resist, but if you want your garden to be a haven for wildlife, I’d urge you to leave many of the jobs till spring arrives proper. read more

At the January meeting of Whitwell WI, the speaker was Jack Hurry, who talked about his entry to the police force after he left the RAF until retirement. They heard lots of funny stories including, when in his senior position, he was asked by the Queen if she could try out the women’s holding cells in the new courthouse. read more

Dr Philip Warren of Sheffield University will give a talk about urban ecology at the February meeting of the North Notts Local Group of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust. They are very pleased to welcome Dr Warren who is a Professor of Ecology, in the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences at the University of Sheffield. read more

Tickhill Film Society will be showing feature-length films in Tickhill Parish Room on the third and last Wednesdays of the month, with doors opening at 6.30pm and films starting at 7.00pm. They will be showing the British WWII drama ‘Darkest Hour’ starring Gary Oldman as Churchill, on Wednesday 13th February, followed by the British romantic drama ‘Finding Your Feet’ starring Imelda Staunton, on Wednesday 20th February. read more

Hospice Tea Bar Volunteers wanted

Bassetlaw Hospice are looking for friendly outgoing people to join their team of tea bar volunteers based in the Out Patients Department of Retford Hospital. All the money raised is in aid of Bassetlaw Hospice. The tea bar provides a selection of drinks and biscuits and also sells a small range of donated merchandise. read more
