February’s meeting of Shireoaks and District WI was entitled ‘A Global Journey through Percussion’ by Giant-Singh Suwali, who played different drums from different countries, mainly in and around Africa and involved audience participation. March’s meeting will be the group’s birthday meeting on 21st March. Follow them on Facebook to find out more. Their meetings are always on the third Thursday of the month at 7.00pm and for the next two months will temporarily be at the Shireoaks Sports and Social Club.

They have another outing to Tutbury Castle to see their old favourite Lesley Smith which is open to group members and, courtesy of Lesley, will only cost the price of the coach and a cream tea. This is because they have had her to entertain them on many occasions and are such fans that she felt members deserved a treat! Her subject will be ‘Sex and the Tudors’, which some of the group have heard before and is highly amusing and enlightening. This will be on 17th June.

Several of the group’s members are also on the Village Hall refurbishment committee and this project is well on its way to completion. The builders should shortly be off site and then after all the internal fittings and accessories have been sorted, there will be an open day for the public and grand opening the day after. Full details will be announced shortly but it is hoped that the people of Shireoaks will go along and view the greatly improved hall and facilities and make use of it for their future events and celebrations. The bulk of funding has come from grants from Viridor and the Lottery and other applications are in the pipeline, but on the local front the WI has been very active in raising money towards this project. They are continuing to do this on a lesser scale but will still have a vested interest in ensuring everything they have planned to do will go ahead.

The group hope that the ladies in Shireoaks will feel inspired to join the WI and benefit from the much-improved facilities. Visitors and new members are always welcome at their temporary home, and after April, in the hall. More information can be obtained from Dawn on 07817 681778 or Diana on 01909 472189.
