An artistic introduction to Gimp

Gimp is the open source application (which also means it’s free) alternative to Adobe’s Photoshop. Gimp has much in common with Photoshop CC which makes it a true professional product, but it is also comparatively easy to gain a useful working knowledge of its key features with a bit of lively tuition; enter Clarborough and Welham IT Group!

Having run computer classes in Clarborough Village Hall for more than 10 years, the IT Group is about to launch a dedicated Gimp-focused programme on Friday evenings from 7.00pm to 8.30pm. Fees will be just £30.00 for a full five-week programme starting on 4th January 2019. Readers of Retford Life magazine will have seen recent photography competition winners who submitted black-and-white photos — this can be achieved in Gimp with as little as two clicks! Readers may also have seen clips of the wonderfully colourised World War I video; colourising old images is, again, something that can be quickly achieved with Gimp.

Planned sessions will start with a basic find-you-way-about introduction to Gimp 2.10, a very recent major update. This will be followed by basic image editing techniques such as cropping, exposure correction and sharpening followed by the use of the Quick Mask feature followed an introduction to layers and channels. Bring your own laptop and tutors will install Gimp 2.10 for you or borrow one of the group’s Windows 10 laptops. Hurry though, classes are already filling!

Regular IT Group classes continue on Tuesdays (1.30pm to 3.00pm) or Wednesdays (10.00am to 11.30am) starting week commencing 7th January at just £20.00 for five weeks. Bring your own laptop or use one of the group’s Windows 10 machines.
