An old Yorkshire joke maintains that the only good thing from Lancashire is the road to Yorkshire. Lancastrians get a laugh by reversing the road’s direction. On 11th April, the Rotherham U3A ‘Out and About’ group, without prejudice, travel the road from east to west to sample a few of the many good things in Manchester, a county in its own right, but part of Lancashire until 1974. read more

IMB Lindholme

HMP Lindholme is close to Hatfield Woodhouse and Doncaster, a Category C training prison, with around 1,000 prisoners. The Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) perform vital roles for ministers and the public, providing an unbiased oversight of the prison. Members are unpaid but claim costs for travel and financial loss. read more

Try Sailing for free

Rotherham Sailing CLub

Rotherham Sailing Club are offering free ‘Try Sailing’ sessions with one of their RYA trained instructors. They are based at Harthill Reservoir, 10 minutes from Junction 30 or 31 of the M1, south east of Sheffield and convenient for North Notts and Derbyshire.

Interested? ‘Try Sailing’ sessions are held on the first Sunday of each month from April to October between 10.00am and 2.00pm. So why not visit? If you want to go along on any other Sunday, members can tell you more about the club and how to get started. On Wednesday 3rd April, Les Francophile de Tickhill shall be entertained by the Yorkshire plants woman, Sarah Hopps, who will give an illustrated talk on ‘The Gardens of France’. As well as running her own nursery, Sarah leads guided tours to gardens abroad. She will also set up a stall of her own spring produce, so come prepared to purchase beautiful plants! read more

The Wednesday 3rd April meeting of the Arts Society Dukeries will be a lecture by Susan Kay-Williams called ‘With Just a Needle and Thread’. This constantly changing lecture features a wide variety of work from the RSN collection and from current and recent students. Showcasing many embroidery techniques, this lecture will open eyes as to just what can be achieved with a needle and thread. read more

Voglia d’Italia (the Italian Society for South Yorks and North Notts) presents ‘La Cappella dei Soldati: A Masterpiece in Miniature’. Vice President Carol Hill presents the story of the Chapel in Orkney, built in WWII by Italian prisoners of war. The meeting takes place on Friday 5th April at 7.30pm at Tickhill Pavilion, Tithes Lane, Tickhill DN11 9QN. Non-members are welcome for a £3.00 admission fee.
