Summer Sundays on the Square

This summer, family fun will descend on the square in Retford, with Summer Sundays on the Square. On 30th June, from 10.00am to 4.00pm, come along to ‘Square Wheels’, where you can see the Jaguar Drivers Club, the Harley Davidson Chapters and Autojumble. It will be the ‘Square Deal’ on 28th July, from 10.00am to 4.00pm. read more

Six year old cuts hair for charity

Hats off to Ella-Mae Buxton, a six-year-old from Tuxford, who has decided to cut off her very long hair in aid of donating it to The Princess Trust. The Trust will then make into wigs for children who have lost their hair due to cancer treatments. The Rotary Club of Retford

Despite losing a meeting day because of the Easter break, the Rotary Club of Retford still had a full programme in April. This included a very interesting talk by David Brocklehurst on behalf of the charity Medical Detection Dogs. He came with Alice. Alice is a Golden Retriever and an Ambassador Dog for the charity. The acute canine sense of smell is utilised to assist in managing several medical conditions including the detection of cancers. read more

An exhibition of work by Amina Khan at the Hub

The next ‘must see’ exhibition at Retford Hub features the work of Amina Khan. It is on now in the gallery and runs until 22nd June. Originally from Liverpool but now based in Gainsborough, she studied Fashion and Textiles at Manchester, completed a PGCE in Liverpool and qualified as an art teacher. read more

Glorious open gardens in June

Did you know that the National Garden Scheme donated £3 million pounds last year to charitable beneficiaries, this money was raised by the tireless efforts of individual garden owners generously opening their gardens for the public to enjoy. The garden entry fee and monies raised from the sale of refreshments all go towards the funds.

Retford Men’s Probus Club has been running since 1971 and are now entering their 49th year. Their meetings take place at the Westhill Community Centre, Ordsall, at 10.00am every other Friday. Now about to enter their tenth year, the Retford branch of the U3A has a membership of over 600 people. There are around 45 interest groups and new members often go to the U3A specifically to join just one group; this is really encouraged, so if you have a friend who is thinking of joining or you might be looking for something to do, maybe this is the organisation for you to join. read more

Party time this summer in North Notts!

Bank Holiday Sunday 25th August will be party time in North Notts, when Retford plays host to ‘Party on the Square’ in Retford’s historic market place. Organised by North Nottinghamshire BID to link into its theme of ‘experience’, this brand new free-to-attend event aims to attract local people from across the area into town to enjoy a fantastic afternoon of music from leading tribute bands, local artistes and headline act, former X Factor contestant and I’m a Celebrity runner up, Jake Quickenden. read more

Retford Ladies Probus Club

President Dawn Cragg welcomed members of Retford Ladies Probus Club on Wednesday 10th April, before introducing Meryl White to tell all about baking and rationing in WWII. Apparently there had been voluntary rationing from 1917, but it was shambolic, even listing things which were not available! By 1940 things had changed, everything was in place and it was rolled out on 8th June with everyone being issued with coupons, even vegetarians were catered for. read more

“Croeso I Gaerdydd” were the opening words for the The National Inner Wheel Conference which was held in Cardiff this year. It was attended by the President of International Inner Wheel, Chris Kirkby, born and raised in Sydney, Australia, who had made the long journey to be there. Her theme for the year called on members to ‘Empower and Evolve’. read more
