Competition has been hot at Retford and District Photographic Society throughout the season, which has just finished. There are regular competitions between club members featuring an advanced class for the top third of last year’s entrants and a club class for all other entrants. The portfolio competitions at the end of the season are open to everyone. The points are totalled to find the club’s Photographer of the Year.

This year saw a close competition develop between the current title holder, Des Lloyd, and recently retired Brian Hillam who now has more time to attend meetings. In the end Des won again by a slim margin. The society anticipate the season to come with interest.

Club members and friends gathered at Retford Golf Club for the presentations. This year, by popular demand, the club replaced its perpetual club trophies with new modern glass ones which members can keep. President Jenny Smith hosted the evening and welcomed guests Rotarian Roger Stenson and Myllie West, representing the Rotary Club of Retford.

Jenny presented the trophies. Members were keen to receive awards they could keep and it was agreed these did the job excellently. The memorial trophies will continue to be awarded annually, reminding them of prominent past members.

Other winners were Alan Burkwood, Alan Dibbo, Harold Gay, Gerry Kemp, Paul Lancaster, Dick Lewis, Alistair MacDonald and Mike Vickers. Runners up all received certificates.

Their next activity is a trip to photograph gannets off Flamborough Head near Bridlington followed by their annual exhibition. This year the exhibition will be in St Swithun’s Church, Retford between 12.30pm on 3rd July and 3.00pm on 6th July. Everyone is very welcome.

There is a warm welcome awaiting anyone for the new season ahead which will run weekly from Monday 2nd September until the end of April 2020 at St Joseph’s Church Hall, Babworth Road, Retford on Monday evenings at 7.30pm. Just go along or contact them via their website and they will look out for you. For more information see www.retford-photographic.co.uk.
