70th birthday celebrations at East Markham WI

In March 54 members and guests celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of East Markham WI. The evening started with a welcome drink and the cutting of the group’s birthday cake by President Jean and the longest serving member. They were treated to a sumptuous savoury buffet, followed by the most delicious desserts, cheeses, tea or coffee and hand made truffles. It really was a celebratory feast.

Following the meal, Jean introduced the guest speaker, Christine Robinson, the former Head Housekeeper at Chatsworth House, who gave a ‘personal view’ of life at the big house. Members listened to her many stories of living and working in the house, such as going at night from her bedsit to the bathroom, along a corridor lined with cases of stuffed birds, with only a torch to light her way, quite an unnerving experience. Time passed quickly and Christine ended her fascinating stories, by telling members that if she did not stop they could be there all night, as she never tired of talking about the House, which had been her life’s work.

Josie gave a very warm vote of thanks to Christine for her most interesting talk and the many insights into life at Chatsworth. She also thanked President Jean and her team for the excellent organisation of our 70th birthday evening, appreciating the hard work necessary for such a successful event.

The group’s new programme starts on Tuesday 21st May, when Dominic Schad will talk about ‘Muddy Fork’, a gardening charity offering wellbeing and mental health support. On 18th June, Sam Glasswell from Bassetlaw Museum talks on ‘Women’s Rights and Suffragettes’. Visitors and new members are always welcome. They meet at East Markham Village Hall at 7.15pm.
