A song for every season
We love to grumble about the British weather, but the Carnival Band is determined to celebrate our climate in all its variety. So, umbrellas at the ready (figuratively speaking — this is an indoor gig!) and prepare to be entertained by one the most original acts on the folk and early music scene. Well-known for their recordings and concerts with folk superstar Maddy Prior, the band has toured throughout the UK and abroad, as far as Sudan and Japan. The four musicians add rich vocal harmony to an astonishing range of instruments, including shawm, cittern, curtal, medieval bagpipes, modern fiddle, guitar, clarinet and bass. Their unique blend of folk, world, classical and contemporary influences defies definition and they are loved for their consummate musicianship, humour and rapport with the audience.
The very name ‘Carnival’ has seasonal origins. In medieval times it was a riotous street festival, taking place in late winter. In this country it survives in such customs as pancake races and Shrovetide football. Starting with a selection of fast and furious Carnival dance tunes from earlier times, the Carnival Band takes the audience through the year, imaginatively weaving folk, historical and contemporary strands from England and abroad into a rich tapestry of seasonal celebration. Musicians and poets have always been inspired by the changes in the seasons and the natural world, and the concert includes settings of texts by Shakespeare and Keats as well as folk song. Themes of climate, nature, tradition, migration, love and loss are explored with catchy ballads, barn-storming dance tunes and settings of texts ranging from the middle ages to the present. This is an evening with something for everyone and sure to be enjoyed by all.
